So how should you prepare for a business portrait. One of the most common questions I am asked is, “what color should I wear?” 

When sitting for a business portrait, I recommend a color darker than your skin. Why? Because I want to highlight your face, not your clothing. Earthtones like gray, green and brown are great choices. Dark blue is also an excellent choice, it’s the color of trust, honesty, and dependability. If red is your signature color that’s great, just know that it’s a bold choice for a headshot and likely to be more memorable than your smile.

Another frequent question is how much time it will take.

When you come in to be photographed, I block 20 to 30 minutes. I don’t want you to feel rushed. If you feel rushed, your images will look rushed. During that time, I’ll photograph the left and the right side of your face. I’ll have you sit for some images and stand for a few as well.

My goal is to have you looking and feeling your best. Professional headshots are not just about capturing a flattering image; they are about telling your story. I started working on a photography project late this fall that I'm calling Lost Race Cars. Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s documentary series about Lost Speedways got me thinking about what happened to the old race cars, where they are located and what do they look like now. These cars remind me of when I was a kid going to the races with my family.  A friend and I always talk about how the cars were hand painted, each with a different look. When you are scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, most people won't stop and click on your photos to make them bigger. There is an exception to that rule, your cover photo on your business or event page. Going with something wide allows you to adjust the image to fit the frame without cutting off details on the top or bottom or the image. This photograph gives you a good look at the arena, the bronco rider in the midground shows some of the action, and the earth in the foreground could even serve as the backdrop for some event details. When you are looking for images to promote your event or sport, in this case auto racing, look for images that check these boxes - does it show the sport, is there some reference to the event in the image, are people having a good time?  The flagman on the left-hand side is wearing the event t-shirt, in the background you see the race cars, and the setting sun illuminates the grandstands so you can see people are enjoying the event. This is one of the things that I still love to do, a traditional portrait of a person in the studio. For me it's not just about the photography. I enjoy the one-on-one communication with the person I'm photographing, making them feel comfortable in front of the camera. The woman I photographed was 80 years old and, in my opinion, a classy, older woman like her should be photographed in this more traditional style. Layn

It's never to late for this photographer to learn some new tricks. I was asked to photograph BMX Racing this summer. I'm glad to take on a new challenge cause I'm one of those guys who's not happy shooting the exact same thing again and again and again. I undertook a black and white project this summer that I'm calling "The People of Dacotah Speedway." I did it because I am passionate about racing and wanted to share Dacotah Speedway's story by photographing more than just cars speeding around corners on Friday nights. To me, the race track is about the people that create the activity. People that I look forward to visiting with because of our shared passion for dirt track racing. I hope you enjoy the images and looking back on the past summer because these images are limited edition, disappearing when the next season begins.  Layn.

The Independence Day Parade in Mandan, ND, is big.  No really, its BIG! There are 120 entities in a normal year, 150 to 160 in an election year. Military groups, marching bands, rodeo princesses, tractors and classic cars traverse down the parade route. Its is one of my favorite events of the year, and I had the good fortune to photograph it this year for a local business organization. I had a fun opportunity recently to photograph a story about a set of twins that are attending school to become automobile mechanics. Here are some of my favorite images from the shoot. Note that the twins look pretty clean. I crawled around on the floor a bit to get the angles I wanted, so I was not so clean.  Least I managed to avoid getting into anything oily, so the wife can't complain too much.  Layn
