I started working on a photography project late this fall that I'm calling Lost Race Cars. Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s documentary series about Lost Speedways got me thinking about what happened to the old race cars, where they are located and what do they look like now. These cars remind me of when I was a kid going to the races with my family. A friend and I always talk about how the cars were hand painted, each with a different look. Every driver had a little special twist to the look of their car including the number. Special thanks to Jay McDonald and the Spetens for letting me photograph their cars. Layn
Sue of Huntington Books is passionate about books. So much so that she hates to see a book, any book, thrown out. I talked to Sue about her bookstore at a meeting one day and her love for her work was obvious. During our conversation, she referenced a bible verse from the Book of Job 19:23, “Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book!" I captured these photographs of Sue in her store. Layn
I helped Wayne out this fall by photographing an auction. We got talking and I was reminded of his love of older vehicles. When he talks about them, it is always what kind of engine it is and what needs to be fixed. He enjoys talking about cars and engines almost as much as he enjoys working on them. Here he is in his shop with one of his new favorites. Layn
I photographed Rob because of his love for riding his motorcycle. He told me, "I always say that when I am on my motorcycle I know exactly why a dog hangs his head out the window!" Riding is his therapy, how he unwinds. Retired from the National Guard, Rob is an adventurer at heart. I love to photograph people like him who have a passion in their heart for the things that they love to do. Layn
What time of day should I photograph a building? I get the best results when the sun is setting, almost gone, and the building's lights come up and you get this amazing blue sky. To give the building some grandeur, I also shot it from a low angle so you are looking up at it. Layn
